Translation of Rabbinic Ruling<\/p>\n

We the undersigned (Rabbinical Board of the Committee for the Preservation of <\/span>Jewish Cemeteries in Europe) have gathered together to discuss the terrible <\/span>desecration and destruction of the Mass Graves that were found in the region of <\/span>Popericani-Vulturi near Iasi in Romania, for the purpose of research and DNA <\/span>testing, and after hearing full details of this story and receiving a detailed report <\/span>of a special emissary of the CPJCE who was sent there to examine the site, we <\/span>feel obliged to publicise and make it clear that according to the Jewish law, any <\/span>form of digging of graves for whichever purpose it may be, is a transgression of <\/span>the Halacha (Jewish Law and Tradition) and is an insult to the deceased, which <\/span>causes them great pain and anguish, (furthermore, we deal with holy martyrs <\/span>who were tortured and brutally killed, and is the responsibility of every single <\/span>Jew to ensure their sanctity, and everlasting resting place in perpetuity)<\/span><\/p>\n

We therefore directly call to the Romanian Government to do their utmost to <\/span>immediately halt all work on the site of the mass graves and stop all further <\/span>testing in any shape of form, and should immediately return the exhumed bones <\/span>to the leaders of the Jewish Community for reburial according to Jewish law and <\/span>Tradition, and especially before the heavy winter weather season.<\/span><\/p>\n

We would hereby like to bring to your attention that there are thousands of <\/span>mass graves all over Europe namely Poland, Ukraine, Germany and Austria, and <\/span>there is a general consensus NOT to touch those mass graves and they have <\/span>never allowed any tests or digging or the similar, and they are left in sanctity <\/span>and in dignity, and we are therefore shocked and anguished that Romania is <\/span>setting a precedent to allow such shameful desecration to take place.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are convinced that you will adhere to the cries and please of the Jewish <\/span>nation all over the world and will stop this desecration of the graves <\/span>immediately, and we look forward to your positive response in order to proceed <\/span>with the reburial of the bones and preserving the site accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n
